In 2013, I studied with the largest online nutrition school in the world, the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and see it as a life-changing experience. I have been asked many times about it so put together this summary based on my experience.

After I resolved my daughter's eczema and allergies naturally, I really began to explore how I could use everything I learned to help others. I had sat in allergist waiting rooms and noticed how weary and flat the other parents looked, and sat through expensive consultations only to feel dismissed with script after script, which left me feeling weary and flat. I knew there had to be more. Doctors play a vital role but don't always have the time to help support us towards reaching our health goals, so once I started to follow my own instincts and began to get results, it really struck me how our journey with my pursuit of deeper understanding had helped our situation transform into something that felt empowering, sustainable and achievable. I wanted that to have a ripple effect.

Becoming a certified Integrative Coach with IIN allows me to focus on a topic I am incredibly passionate about, that also brings in my life experience and previous career skills to build a business based around me. I love my work and no two days are the same because I get to mix things up between coaching, writing, digital marketing, recipe development, ongoing education and social media. I drop my daughter to school, take the dog for a walk and then head home to my home office to write or talk to clients. Others do it differently. You can make it what you want it to be!

I see my time at IIN as providing the foundation for the work I do now, and really like that they encourage students to go on their own personal development journeys - to question everything - which for those who know my style, is perfect because I want to pursue my own curiosities rather than blindly follow a strict curriculum with no room to move. It taught me how to better nourish several aspects of my own life, and as we're all different, there really isn't a one-size-fits-all solution.

I did a lot of research before deciding if IIN was right for me and encourage you to do the same. This is what I was looking for:

  • To use my passion, knowledge and experiences to be a game-changer for others.

  • Flexible, self-paced study I could easily manage with an active toddler.

  • The opportunity to build my own business and hours, based on what I enjoyed doing.

  • More deeply investigate my own healing journey.

  • Access practical resources for building and marketing an integrative nutrition clinic.

  • Pursue deeply fulfilling work that also allowed me to help support my own family.

What Is Involved?

The IIN training program is a year-long course with a comprehensive curriculum that covers over 150 dietary theories, encouraging a holistic foundation which combines coaching techniques with practical business resources. It's a proven program with over 100,00 students and graduates.

There are no academic prerequisites outside of a high school qualification and intakes are approximately every two months. The course is entirely online over 40 modules, with a few breaks throughout the year so students can catch up if needed. You can work at your own pace as long as you fulfil the graduation requirements. You'll meet heaps of like-minded people from across the world - I am still in touch with many of my classmates.

Each module consists of pre-recorded lectures on the App, downloadable handouts and assignments found on the Student Dashboard. Many students work full-time, raise children or have other responsibilities. Graduation requirements included attending a minimum number of group coaching sessions, passing online assessments and submitting six completed Health Histories. On graduation, you receive the IIN Certificate in Integrative Nutrition Coaching. Take a look at their current syllabus right here.
